2 weeks old

Amelia is now two weeks old. The novelty of having a sister seems to have mostly worn off for Elizabeth, but Matthew is entranced. He's always trying to cuddle her, play with her or say hello. "Me wake up Meelee" is a very common refrain. The other day he tried to change her diaper, which is not something Elizabeth has ever wanted to do with either of her siblings.

At two weeks she's starting to be a little more alert, at least in the evenings. Mostly she wakes up to nurse, fills her diaper and then passes out again. There is a great deal more baby spit-up involved this time round - so much so that I wish I had a baby scale to assure myself that she is actually gaining weight. There are many, many diapers so I'm not exactly worried, but she does lose what appears to be the entire contents of her stomach at least once a day (usually down my front) and there are many other smaller episodes throughout the day. She has the loudest belches I have ever heard from a baby. The kids think this is hilarious and try to imitate her.

Amelia meets Evelyn

Elizabeth was just over three months old when she met friend Aidan for the first time (he was one week old at the time). So it's kind of fitting that their latest siblings - two week old Amelia and two and a half month old Evelyn - met today. We forgot to take pictures of their feet though! Next time, right Dianne? ;)

Medium Bashful Lamb

Meet "Medium Bashful Lamb", which I think is the most hilarious name for a stuffed animal ever (seriously, that's what was printed on the label!). It even beats out our previous favourite name from a stuffed animal Brendan bought me in high school, dubbed "Poseable Frog"

Anyway, the lamb (or bunny, if you listen to Matthew) is an adorable present from Auntie Janice's friend Jess.

Auntie Janice

Auntie Janice wasn't feeling well when Amelia was first born, so she didn't get her newborn cuddle time right away. Dealing with Matthew overnight two nights in a row nearly did her in - too much interrupted sleep when you are fighting a bug is not helpful! Luckily she is now all better and making up for lost time...

Having more people around to help is great because as it turns out I may have overdone it yesterday and had to spend the entire day in bed today. This was not only frustrating but quite disappointing to the kids who want me to be up and about!

June 13, 2015

The last couple of times I had a newborn, I hardly left the top floor of the house for the first couple of weeks. I did not go up and down the stairs frequently and basically sat around convalescing.

This time around my mobility is significantly improved and the pain is much less. I remember coming home from the hospital with Elizabeth and being unable to use the facilities because Brendan had closed the toilet lid and I was unable to bend down far enough to lift it. This time I accidentally dropped something on the floor in the first couple of days and bent over to pick it up without thinking about it until later. So I've been feeling good. I also don't have midwifery support this time around, which means I've been forced to go out a number of times. Day 2 to take Amelia to the doctor. Day 5 to get my staples out. Day 7 to take Amelia back to the doctor for her one week checkup (at which she was back up to her birth weight!). Insert comment here about how amazing post-partum midwifery care is and how much I miss it!

Despite having to go out a bunch of times, I was pretty happy with my recovery. So I started coming down for meals, and putting the kids to bed again, and generally feeling like I was practically back to normal except for not being able to drive or pick up Matthew. Turns out I should have behaved myself slightly better, but I did enjoy going to Elizabeth's graduation and hanging out at Dave and Karen's watching the kids play and Auntie Karen doing what she can to encourage her baby to come. Walks, some gardening, a little swinging of the pick-axe (as you do...)
