Hello, Goodbye

Lorianne's back from the wilds of Emo (I hear it's a real place) and the kids were super pleased to welcome her home. They were less pleased to hear that Hayley was now leaving for Toronto.

"Whhyyyyy?" they complained. I explained that Lorianne kind of wanted her room back, and no, she didn't want to share. Over the next few days, there was much discussion. Long term use of the guest room was ruled out when they found out that this would mean no visitors such as Grandma and Grandpa, Auntie Mary and Angie.

Matthew let me know that Hayley could have the spare mattress stored under his bed. Elizabeth suggested that Hayley could have her bed and she and Matthew could move into the office on the floor (since she reckoned Hayley might not want to share a room). Finally they settled for extracting a promise to come back and visit.

Fifteen months

At fifteen months Amelia is definitely making the transition from mostly crawling to mostly walking. She weighs 18 pounds.

She's a terrifyingly good climber, whether it's to the top of the highest slide in the playground or up the ladder of Elizabeth's bunk bed. She looooves slides and will fling herself down with abandon (backwards, thankfully).

She is also extremely fond of the swing, especially when she can con her siblings into pushing her.

She still doesn't eat meat, or eggs, or fish or any protein really, but everything else gets tried before she drops it unceremoniously off her tray. Elizabeth is convinced that Amelia's just saving her leftovers for later, and it is certainly true that she will come back and scrounge a snack under her highchair if we have neglected the cleanup too long.

Amelia's actually quite a good eater if messy as long as she is allowed to feed herself - she is very independent and does not take kindly to unwanted help. She is just starting to demand a fork and spoon like her siblings. Some favourite foods include corn on the cob, pasta, peas and chocolate ice cream.

She's mostly down to one nap in the early afternoon and goes to bed around seven with the rest of the kids, but her schedule is wildly unpredictable.

Amelia has recently learned how to kiss. She loves to crawl over mommy and daddy in the morning and give wake up kisses. This is adorable when she wakes up at her regular time around 7am. Less so the odd time she gets up early...

She has added a few more signs, but in general she's not particularly communicative. Perhaps her siblings have used up all of the words. Or maybe she has trained us too well to respond to a shriek and holding out her hand "WANT".

She's always played pretty independently but said play is getting more complex and imaginative. She likes to stack blocks to build castles (and knock them down, of course). A favourite toy right now is the Fisher Price bus. She loves putting the people in and taking them out.

Trading Post, birthday party

We went to the museum of Nature with friends Aidan, Caitlyn and Evelyn in order to do some trading at the Trading Post.

This was the first time Elizabeth did a little bit of research and put it on the card first. Sadly, the museum no longer takes maggot casings, which I thought was silly as they were clearly empty. But I guess there was an "incident" with a supposedly empty wasp nest that came to life in storage...

In the afternoon we went to little Olivia's birthday party. She belongs to Brendan's friend Joey. Brendan and Joey both grew up on our street, and while Joey did move - he didn't go far - just one street over, so he's still pretty much a neighbour. Joey's current house happens to be the house Brendan's family lived in before they moved to our house. Small world!

Picture with a Bear

Elizabeth and Matthew both had their half-birthdays recently, so we thought we'd better take their photos. Matthew loves taking his photo with the bear, but he has his own ideas about how he should be depicted. The results are certainly authentic...

Family selfies

We had slightly too much fun with the camera. Also Elizabeth might have grown just a wee bit over the summer. Her sweaters and pants no longer fit!
