It was time to vote again. Elizabeth and Matthew were most indignant that we went without them this year, but it was awkward enough doing the baby exchange at the polling station thing.

Brendan and I had a tough time making up our minds this time round - there were five solid candidates, four of whom had extensive community experience. Ultimately Shawn Menard won, which Brendan had mixed feelings about since there are questions about whether he will be a good representative for us or not. Specifically, some family members were alarmed by Shawn's idea of extra taxation on "mansions". I was quite impressed by his communication skills as a candidate, but whether that translates into having a useful staff and getting useful things done is up in the air. Time will tell.

I spent a good chunk of the day exhorting those around me to go vote (and educating them on their options). Slightly amusing and awkward moment at karate when I was explaining to someone about how our provincial MPP (Joel Harden) had endorsed Shawn and our federal MP (Catherine McKenna) had endorsed Christine McAllister and it turned out that Joel Harden's kid is in Matthew's class and therefore Joel was standing right behind me. Small world!

There was theoretically an out of town tournament this weekend, but the Toronto version was cancelled, Matthew was grading and the Douvris Halloween party was scheduled for the Saturday evening since the world's are in Dublin Halloween weekend. So we told Elizabeth that she could either go to the tournament OR the party and that was that!

The girls kind of outdid themselves with the creepy costumes. I may have gotten a bit nostalgic for the days of the homemade robot costumes. Elizabeth is vowing to take pity on me next year and try something cuter.

The kids were so excited for the party that they got ready a couple of hours early. It was sensei Cody's birthday, so they all made him birthday cards (but I only got a photo of Matthew's - they were all very nice though).

This year the party was split into two parts by age, with Matthew's haunted maze being much less creepy, which was nice. Maria didn't appreciate the haunted maze. Elizabeth insisted on taking me through. I may have shrieked a couple of times. I think the maze designers were quite satisfied with themselves.

Thanksgiving and Brendan and Margaret’s birthday all fall within a couple of weeks, so this year we decided to celebrate both birthdays at the same time!

Michael at nine months is very active.  He goes, goes and goes.  In fact he goes so much that changing his diaper is getting to be quite challenging as he will flip over and take off the second it has been removed. Daddy has resorted to changing him by holding him down with his feet.  Aside from displeasure at being restrained for such inconveniences, he is a delightfully cheerful little boy.  Everyone still comments on how content he is and how beautiful his big blue eyes are. He is starting to make some more or less recognizable sounds ("all done", "mama") and certainly makes his desires understood.  Sometimes he sings quite elaborate complaining songs (we don't know what he's saying, but he is clearly complaining about the state of the world). Usually this is in response to being strapped into the car or stroller, especially if it is cold.

He has started bear crawling much of the time (knees off the ground). He likes to play peek-a-boo and will pass you objects and expect to get them back. He can tidy up, but prefers to untidy... Putting things into other things is great fun.

He is napping less (roughly twice a day but much less predictable timing).  He eats most things but in small quantities.  Yogurt is still a bit hit and he definitely prefers to feed himself although he seems to tolerate being fed by Elizabeth and sometimes Mommy.  He loves to explore and puts just about everything in his mouth.  With three older siblings leaving small objects around it is a full time job making sure he doesn't swallow something he shouldn't.  He is also at the opening cupboards and drawers stage aka finger amputation stage and very much enjoys putting things in and taking things out of said cupboards and drawers. He does not enjoy pinching his fingers. He is now quite proficient at climbing stairs (or anything else that is vaguely stair like such as mommy's computer), but still hasn't got the hang of going back down. His favorite thing though is playing with his siblings, which he will often do for hours.  He leaps with joy when they come home from school.

Big family thanksgiving dinner featured Sarah (plus boy), Uncle Dave and Auntie Karen and family, Auntie Heather and Andre, Uncle Mark, Grandma J, Uncle Chris and Auntie Yukiko and family, Auntie Janice and of course our crew of hooligans.

We made a kid table for all nine cousins, even Michael and told Erika and Elizabeth they were responsible for feeding him. It actually worked for the main course!

Turkey supper with sweet potato and corn. Squash, salad with many toppings to be added. Uncle Chris brought his famous rolls and pumpkin pie - including one that was gluten free!

Mila and Simon from across the street came over to play before supper. Then we kicked them out, and they came back after we were done eating.

After supper the kids built a massive fort to sleep in and Erika stayed for a sleepover. Maria is not a fan of sleepovers, so she went home to sleep in her own bed.
