Summer school week 1

We're continuing the bike challenge, so we biked every day.

Michael had a headache and suddenly threw up on Wednesday which put a damper on our plans. Other kids didn't want to be around potentially contagious sibling and we'd previously planned to go to the beach so the older three and I biked to Mooney's bay despite threatening skies. It rained while we were there but we were already in our swimsuits so this did not matter.

We built an epic fort out of cardboard and fort magic. This week's theme is "party week", so we had a wii party, did a disco dance and went to the beach in addition to celebrating Canada / Mary day.

Our plan for this summer's homeschooling is:

Elizabeth has 2 book reports to complete, an arduino project and a lego movie on the history of the Rideau canal to make. She is to memorize a poem and do a research project on poisonous plants. We'll work through a light unit from her physics science curriculum. She'll also keep working through Math-u-see, as well as playing prodigy.

Matthew and Amelia will read to me as often as possible. Matthew is learning his times tables and working through Math-u-see Gamma, and playing prodigy. Amelia is working through Alpha and playing Monster Math.

All the kids will keep a daily journal, though we are planning to consolidate the weekend to make things slightly easier. This year journals will be kept en français. Matthew is going to be encouraged to do his in cursive and we will be working on sounding out his frequently used words to improve spelling. I've changed his goal to write about 3/4 of a page rather than focussing on number of sentences. This is an attempt to have him write more descriptive sentences instead of figuring out the fewest letters possible. Amelia will also be working on sounding out some of her words and working on her penmanship. Matthew and Amelia have been banned from using the sentence "c'était amusant".

Everyone is also studying music history, latin and french grammar using various games.

For latin we are using dinolingo videos as well as duolingo for the older two kids. The first lesson went very well and even Michael is enjoying it.

Once a week we have a shop class one on one with Daddy. This week Elizabeth helped Daddy repair the window on the playhouse under the deck. Matthew helped Daddy level a temporary spot for the new playhouse and put the roof on. Everyone worked on getting the playhouse ready for painting.

Canada Day

We invited the Sunnyside crew for brunch outside and everyone else on zoom. There were snowbirds.

After brunch, various neighbours came over and we snacked some more. It was nice to sit and chat in a vaguely more normal way.

In the evening, we went to "Chez Maman" for my birthday. The menu was slightly more complicated than maybe it should have been as there was watermelon salad AND a green salad with shishekababs AND stuffed green peppers. It was very good though and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Then the kids and I went for a sunset bike ride, before coming home and watching fireworks on TV as per tradition.

1000 hours Outside

June was hot, humid, rainy and some of the kids wanted to play minecraft more than they wanted to play outside - which is reflected in our results! Nevertheless we spent a great deal of time outdoors, despite this being the lowest number of hours since March!

June food

Lots of pasta and veggies this month.

We were lucky to get a special Japanese dessert from our buy nothing group so of course we had sushi with it. Lots of celebrations this month from Amelia's birthday to three baptism birthdays.

My favourite meal was probably our antipasto platter though.

Hanging with neighbours

Little Samuel from two doors down is walking! One of the side-effects of being somewhat isolated is that the smallest children seem to grow in great fits and starts. Surely Samuel was only just born!

As the restrictions have eased, Elizabeth and Charlotte often drop by to play on our play equipment. Our kids love to go over to their backyard to dangle upside down and play with their toys.

Douvris WKC Virtual World Qualifier #5

The 5th and final of the WKC virtual world qualifier tournaments.  Elizabeth competed in the same 5 divisions and had a great day.  She attributes this to her new mats which finally made it here a few days ago after being stuck somewhere on the ocean for months.  She placed 2nd in hard style forms, 3rd in classical forms, 3rd in traditional weapons, 1st in extreme weapons and 2nd in creative weapons.  Medal positions in all 5 divisions!

After totaling all the scores from the 5 tournaments for all competitors Elizabeth is ranked:

4th in hard style forms

3rd in classical forms

2nd in traditional weapons

1st in extreme weapons

3rd in creative weapons

If we understand things correctly this means she has secured the wildcard spot in extreme weapons for the Canadian national team and is eligible to attend the world championships in Florida this October.

There will also be a virtual world championships at the end of July in which the 1st place position in each division will face off against the winner of an elimination series of the other competitors for the title of virtual world champion.

All a bit surreal and very exciting.

Amelia's baptism birthday

It was Amelia's baptism birthday and with relaxing covid rules and imminent entry in to stage 2 we decided it would be great to have her godparents over in person to celebrate rather than a zoom.

Lorianne is moving to Toronto so we had her and her parents who were in town to help over for a distanced farewell dinner. Originally I had this whole plan where we would be fewer than 10 people at any one time but as anyone who isn't me could have predicted, we were running late and Michael ended up coming in time to watch us eat. I should have just invited him to dinner although we would have been one person over. Aside from that rudeness on my part it was very, very nice to have our celebration in person.

Pie Day #3

Michael wanted to make another rhubarb pie with Grandma because last time they actually didn't make pie. Not that he actually helped much last time anyway, but since Elizabeth had another tournament it seemed like as good a time as any to make Michael's pie dreams come true.

He wasn't particularly interested in helping (as expected) when we got there, but when I pointed out that Grandma and Matthew were making the pie without him he did get interested enough to "help" roll out the dough. Or in other words he took grandma's nicely rolled dough and wrapped it around the rolling pie, making it such that she needed to roll it out again.

Chase

Our neighbour Horatio got a puppy, which he named Chase!

I gather this was somewhat of an impulse buy. The kids were thrilled to be able to spend a few hours playing with the puppy over the weekend, although Amelia and Michael were inclined to run away as they didn't want him to nip their toes.

After 48 hours Wendy had had enough of staying up all night and decided they weren't dog people. So they gave the dog back to the breeder. Too bad for us!
